Frequently Asked Questions
-
PAR focuses primarily on second-response disaster work, helping communities clean up after the initial emergency has passed. Our work often includes removing storm-damaged or hazardous trees, tarping damaged roofs, and mucking out flooded homes.
-
Because the extent of storm damage can’t be predicted, volunteer opportunities can arise quickly. For local day deployments, we typically send an email and a text a day or two in advance.
For out-of-town deployments, you’ll receive more advance notice as we arrange housing—typically in a local church building—and determine areas of need before we travel.
Deployments may last anywhere from one to seven days, but you decide what works for you. We typically provide transportation for out-of-town deployments in one of our PAR trucks, although you’re also welcome to drive your own vehicle, depending on your needs.
-
No special skills or previous experience are required to volunteer with PAR. You do need to be able to work outdoors and perform manual labor. We can always use extra hands to drag limbs to the road, clean up debris, and help muck out homes after a flood.
We also rely on volunteers with certified skills, including operating chainsaws and skid steers and tarping roofs. We occasionally offer training classes for volunteers who want to develop these skills.

For local day deployments, PAR provides most everything you’ll need at the job site. You're welcome to bring your own personal protective equipment, but PAR provides it as well. For overnight deployments, bring your personal medications, work clothes, toiletries, sheets, and towels.

PAR generally works in the greater North Alabama area on a case-by-case basis. For larger disasters, such as hurricanes and tornadoes, we may travel to other states throughout the Southeast, depending on the need and the availability of our volunteers.
